Carrie Fisher

Carrie Fisher is an actress who achieved incredible fame with her portrayal of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy. Known as one of the most beautiful actresses of her day, Fisher has completely let herself go in recent years, packing on close to 100 lbs and losing her femininity in the process.

Carrie Fisher was born on October 21, 1956 in Beverly Hills, California. Fisher grew up in a famous family - her father was singer Eddie Fisher and her mother is actress Debbie Reynolds. Fisher's parents divorced when she was two - her father remarried to popular actress Elizabeth Taylor and her mother remarried to Harry Karl, who owned a chain of shoe stores. Taking advantage of her family's entertainment connections, at the tender age of 12, Fisher began appearing with her mother in Las Vegas, Nevada. In one of her first acting roles, Fisher appeared as a debutante and singer in 1973 in the hit Broadway revival Irene, which starred her mother.

Fisher broke into movies with a role in the 1975 comedy movie Shampoo, alongside Warren Beatty and Goldie Hawn. Fisher's next movie was Star Wars: A New Hope, where she played her career-making role of Princess Leia. Fisher received acclaim for both her beauty and her acting abilities in Star Wars as well as in sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, three of the biggest box office hits of all time.

Fisher's role in Return of the Jedi provided the iconic image of her in a gold bikini as Jabba the Hutt's slave. After audiences saw Fisher in the gold bikini, she became one of the reining Hollywood sex symbols for years to come.

Fisher appeared in other major movies around the time of the Star Wars trilogy, such as 1980's Blues Brothers where she played the jilted lover of John Belushi's character. In that movie, her character chased after and shot at Belushi with a machine gun after he stood her up at a wedding. In a famous scene, Belushi pleaded for forgiveness in a dirty underground tunnel, kissed Fisher's character, and then dropped her in a mud puddle and walked away.

Fisher must have felt like she was on top of the world by the early 1980s. Unfortunately, her career was at its peak and had only one way to go from there - down, and it did crash spectacularly.

Fisher did continue to appear in movies, although the roles were fewer and farther in between. Fisher moved over to the writing side of entertainment as her roles diminished. In 1987 she published her first novel, Postcards from the Edge, and wrote the screenplay for the 1990 film adaptation of the novel. She also had supporting roles in the successful 1989 movies When Harry Met Sally and The 'Burbs.

Throughout the 1990s Fisher seemed to do more writing than acting. She published the novel Surrender the Pink in 1991 and Delusions of Grandma in 1993. She appeared in the 1997 comedy, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, which was a moderate success at the box office, but became much more popular via movie rentals and sequels. She also became a busy "screen doctor," reviewing scripts for movies and TV shows, such as the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Fisher also appeared in minor roles in few movies during the 21st century, such as Scream 3 in 2000, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in 2001. As the movie roles dried up, Fisher began acting in her own one-woman auto-graphical play, Wishful Drinking, from 2006-2009. Fisher later wrote a book of the same name, Wishful Drinking, which earned a nomination for a 2010 Grammy Award in the Best Spoken Word Album category.

Away from the entertainment business, Fisher's personal life has been rocky to say the least. She was engaged to actor Dan Aykroyd and married diminutive singer Paul Simon for a couple years in the early 1980s. Fisher also had a three-year relationship (and a daughter) in the early 1990s with top Hollywood agent, Bryan Lourd. Lourd infamously left Fisher to pursue a homosexual relationship with a man. A few years ago, Lourd claimed that Fisher's abuse of codeine was responsible for causing him to turn gay.

Fisher also became an alcoholic and a drug addict, as she has discussed in numerous media outlets, such as during a Today Show interview. Fisher also experienced a bout with mental illness - she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and spent some time in an mental hospital. She also apparently became addicted to fast food such as McDonald's or Hostess Twinkies and Ding Dongs, ballooning up from 100 lbs in the days of Return of the Jedi to 180 lbs by 2010. Fisher is almost large enough to play Jabba the Hutt in a Return of the Jedi sequel.

Fisher has followed in the footsteps of fellow washed-up celebrity Kirstie Alley and is currently a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig weight-loss products.

As if the weight gain wasn't bad enough, Fisher also chopped the beautiful long hair she used to have, giving her a somewhat masculine look, as shown below:

Fisher also recently outed John Travolta as a homosexual in an interview she gave to the Advocate.

Although she was an international sex symbol in the early 1980s, Carrie Fisher has really let herself go in recent years as her movie roles evaporated. I hope she can regain control of her life and gets back down to a healthy weight, which would cause at least some of her conspicuous former beauty to reappear. However, until her gets her life and health back under control, there can be no doubt that Carrie Fisher is one washed-up celebrity!

Not sure I consider Carrie a has-been. Herr Broadway show and book have been very successful. She's a funny woman, and she can laugh at her own downfalls. She is Jabba, though.

You failed to mention that Carrie Fisher struggles with bipolar disorder and spent time in a mental hospital.

^^^ Thanks, I added in a sentence about the bipolar disorder.

I have followed your blog for a while and usually enjoy your writeups. However, reading this one made me sad- so because Carrie Fisher weighs more than she used to, she's not feminine anymore? Really? "She can now play Jabba the Hut". So classy. As mentioned, she has bipolar disorder- the medications that treat that have lots of side effects, including weight gain. Apparently, you'd rather she'd commit suicide or act out inappropriately than be the unforgivable sin of being fat. And no, I'm not Carrie. I've never seen the Star Wars movies and I'm not really a fan of hers. I just believe that women come and all shapes and sizes, and being fat doesn't make you masculine.

She reminds me of Margot Kidder. A lot.
Austin Powers had a 16 million budget but earned 70 million. Not a flop at all.
Did you know her daughter's father left her for a gay man?
I agree though, she is washed up.

Oh, and she totally outed John Travolta a few months back.

^^^ Thanks, I made the appropriate edits. Bryan Lourd left her for another man and actually blames her for his homosexuality!

She looks like Sharon Osborne! Actually I think she gained all of the weight that Sharon lost! Anyways, Carrie Fisher is a closet case. I truly believe that she is in denial of her true sexuality. She is most definitely a lesbian!

I jacked off to the second photo down...man, she sure had some sexy legs back during the day!!

Good post, Movie Fan!!! It was worth the wait!! You really need to do an entry on that bible thumper Kirk Cameron.

The part about her looking like Jabba the Hut almost made me piss my pants...it's so true!!

Sorry, but she's not washed up just because she got fat. Look how fat Brando got before he died, was he washed up?

I seriously thought that one 'fat' picture of her making that weird gesture was Photoshopped until I looked around on Google, LOL.

"Only reason she got where she got is because she's half Jewish,"

No, she got where she is because of who her parents were, Debbie Reynolds & Eddie Fisher. Nobody cares that she's half-Jewish.

Anonymous said...

Brando was very washed up. And morbidly obese, tipping at scale at close to 400. His last movies were flops too.

"She also apparently became addicted to fast food such as McDonald's or Hostess Twinkies and Ding Dongs"

I love this shit - such a specific assumption, just like in the Kirstie Alley post. You've got me laughing so hard I can't breathe. Keep it up!

I think it's tremendously unfair to call Carrie Fisher washed up. She's gained weight and has done a tremendous amount of drugs...but she's very much open on her flaws, and has a great gritty dark sense of humor about it. Check out her one-woman show that was on HBO earlier this year; she's really witty and hilarious, and not a shabby writer either.

So glad you are back with some new content. Much applause is due, your highness.
With your two most recent write-ups however, I am afraid that you may be steering this ship into shallow waters.
I think your focus should be more on child stars

Man, I'd love to find myself a time machine and travel back in time to the 70's when that second photo down was taken...I'd even be willing to wear a polyester suit with bell bottoms to fit in with the times..I'd then find the studio where that photo was taken run up to her, whip out my hard throbbing cock and make a mess all over those sexy legs of hers.

I remember reading once that she struggled with anorexia at one time and that she starved herself before filming return of the Jedi. I don't consider her washed up and was surprised to see her on here.

Fisher was great in Star Wars, but couldn't branch out to anything else because all she really had was looks and no uncanny acting ability seen outside of SW, so she later appeared in cameos that referenced SW (Fan Boys, Jay silent bob strike back), which is a good enough reason to consider her 'washed-up.'

It also seems Fisher later admitted having sex with SW fans during the height of her fame. Imagine that, the most unsavory bloated pimple-faced teens in their Star Wars regalia running a long greasy train on princess Leia. this is probably why she along with other has-beens waive the bi-polar disorder flag years later.

The moral of this story is that she was lucky enough to get plowed before turning into the fat manatee we have the displeasure of revisiting today who is nowadays good for nothing more than writing memoires that at best will appear on Lifetime thus only being relevant to other fat women past their prime.

It is pretty sad. She does like a normal, healthy weight gain that coems with age - this is some kind of a bloat related to drug and alcohol use. And she is washed up because she hasnt done anything worthwhile lately and is just a mere shadow of the person she used to be. For someone who is barely 60 she looks pretty tired and washed up.

how is she washed up??? washed up is paris hilton or those who are still out there trying to hold onto their 15 minutes of fame not realizing they are gone.

she quit acting to dedicate herself to raising her family and never looked back!

she's now in broadway and quite successful at it.

Saw Carrie on the Today show recently. She's lost a lot of weight, but she still hasn't lost her power to turn dudes gay. I wouldn't step into the same building as her simply out of fear.

WHAT is this DRIVEL you've written?

When you're 55+ I'd like to see how well you keep yourself together.

Carrie has rebuilt herself into a successful business woman not just in 'doctoring' scripts to make a hit movie but also writing, publishing her own material and producing her own shows - and that's AFTER all the trauma she's endured through drug abuse and bipolar.
And she still puts this sometimes difficult life into a humorous light for all of us to look at our own lives from a different perspective.

I think Carrie is looking pretty trim, thank you very much.

How successful would YOU be if you'd gone through the same?
Washed up or completely gone out to sea?

She's still a star and still has a long career ahead.

Anonymous said...

Are you crazy? This is Princess Leia? Never! You must be out of your mind! She could never make another movie after star wars and she would still be set for life!!!

I love Carrie Fisher. She lost 50 lbs. and looks GOOD!

I loves me some anonymous comments, especially the one about Ms. Fisher's rise to fame steeming from the fact that her dad was Jewish and, well, we all know how the Jews control everything...
That makes about as much sense as the anonymous commenters who gripe about washed-up black actors who are the victims not of their own lack of talent and poor lifestyle choices but of bad old racism.

Carrie is not washed up. Did you know that besides being a very successful author she is also a Script Doctor?

No said...

Carrie isn't washed up. She is a very successful author and is also a script doctor who rewrites scripts for film companies. And she has stated many numerous times through out her life she's hated acting and that's pretty much why she hasn't done much of it. So your assessment on her being washed up is your pretty distorted perspective on what washed up really means.

teddy crescendo said...

Christopher, you dont seem to understand what "washed-up" really means, it primarily means that at 56 Carrie is now 38 years past the absolute pinnacle and peak of her physical attractiveness and desirability (her 18th birthday), thats SPECIFICALLY why shes "washed-up" ! ! !, when a bird is 18 she cannot be "washed-up" (no matter how supposedly unsuccessful she is) simply because she IS 18, the industry that Carrie is involved in is all about being 18, when you get past that age you`re finished ! ! !.

Man Carrie fisher does look alot different. That does not mean she is washed up. It is her life she can look how ever she wants to look.

Scar2 said...

Ok, so her acting career is washed-up but she still makes a decent living as a writer. Besides her books & her play, her wit has also made her a script doctor. When a movie script needs a bit of punching up, she is the person to go to. However, script doctors are almost never given credit but still get paid well.

i saw her on the roseane roast and yea she looks heavy but her face still looks pretty and im glad her hair is longer again i hope she can loose more weight being short and fat isnt a good combination

LOL. Okay here we go.

This comment probably won't get approved and if it does, I'm waiting for the backlash of immature-mocking-to-prove-how-superiour-and-witty-I-am comments.

Just to educate a few of you - Carrie Fisher suffers with bipolar disorder; I am also a 26 year old female bipolar sufferer.

Point 1: Bipolar is chemical - it's a glitch in the make up of your brain, pretty much.
Point 2: It can very often lead to substance abuse as a way to 'self medicate' when other medications don't work.
Point 3: Pretty much ALL medications for bipolar cause weight gain.

You wonder why she's gained weight? She's been a very sick lady. Perhaps, instead of mocking such people, we should applaud them and encourage them. I know it's far easier to ridicule than to praise - I guess it's become the human condition.

And I'm pretty sure that weight gain was distressing for her - I'm also pretty sure that part of her is saying 'I don't give a damn, I'm trying to get well'

And in the day and age of so much media manipulation on the 'perfect female image' and the pressure on females to look a certain way - shame on you guys. Really.

People, lets count, 1,2,3. . ., 30 years since Star Wars Episode 5! Why are you comparing how a person looked thirty years ago to how they look today? How many pounds have you gained? Why don't you post your pics from 30 years ago and current pics. (Especially those pics from the movies that YOU STARRED IN!Ha-Ha!) What disorders & health issues run in your family? Let me guess; NONE, right? Get real people!

I have grown to believe that General Patton was totally right when he stated that "All Glory Is Fleeting". I read through these stories of "washed up celebrities" and realize that these people go from such stardom that they cannot go to the mall to where nobody cares so much they cannot get employment. What a crazy scenario that has to drive one crazy. The unfortunate thing is...given the significant number of stories that appear to be posted...the scenario is predictable.
Yep...she has gained weight. So have I. I remind myself that we are all people. I too have made bad choices and have had times in my life where things were not as good as they used to be. It is up to us to come back.
Guess it comes down to...the higher you go...the harder you fall.

Anonymous said...

Wow. Mocking her weight is completely cruel. As someone who's had serious mental issues, I can tell you that psych medications often cause people to gain a significant amount of weight. I'm leaning towards this being the case with her rather than your unfunny joke about eating twinkies.

Pretty outdated blog post considering Carrie has slimmed back down, has grown her hair back out and has now accepted the role of reprising her character for the new Star Wars series.

I'm sure she won't appeal to 17 year old kids - but then, why would she want to? She's a woman, not a kid.

I think she looks great - and couldn't give a fling if she's had some plastic surgery. The doc did a decent job.

She knows she jumped into the abyss of personal issues - but every person has their demons to fight. I'm glad to see she's taking back her life.

Carrie Fisher has worked with some of the best actors and directors in the business. She's been nominated for 2 Emmy Awards in the last 10 years. She has a long and varied resume. She's slimmed down again and is starring in the next Star Wars. She's an accomplished writer, producer, actor and all around hilarious personality. "Washed up"? Only to the unenlightened.

Another good role she had was in Woody Allen's 1986 "Hannah and Her Sisters," in which she played the catering business partner of perennial loser Dianne Wiest--she was excellent in that. I agree with the posters who point to her smarts, wit, and literary production as probably keeping her out of the "has-been" category (BTW, where is Dianne Wiest??)

Ok, she married Paul Simon. You could have noted multimillionaire, genius lyricist and composer, 1960s icon ...fellow writer...so many things...but they are positive so you dig around and come up with 'diminutive', wow! Literary imaginitive genius ...not.

I've just sussed it.

The writer of this site is the one who is desperately washed up ...and way beyond bitter ...hence the glee in the pathetic, erroneous, and/or just deeply spiteful aspersions on these people just going about their lives. Nasty

Well...she's dead now. so I suppose you can stop ridiculing her. She was, at one time, physically beautiful. But she was also clever, quick with a quip, and a talented writer (she even script-doctored several Hollywood blockbusters), and she possessed these qualities long after her looks had faded. Point being, she was FAR from being a washed-up has-been. She was so very much more than just another pretty face.

RIP Carrie Fisher.

You should have or at least I hope you do an entry for Dan Akyroyd. He is severely washed up on many levels.

Carrie Fisher, whatever she may have been, is dead now. Can we not show respect for the dead and back off from this? Why isn’t her name removed? This seems very inappropriate.

Anonymous said...

Her absolute peak was during those scenes of her chained to that giant slug as it's slave. Unfortunately her drug use is what ultimately led to her early grave.

Yes she's dead, but the lesson here is more of a cautionary tale, so stop sweeping stuff like that under the rug just because she played some brat from a movie you saw as a child.
