Tina Yothers

Tina Yothers is a former child star who acted on the hit 1980s TV show Family Ties where she played Jennifer Keaton, the youngest daughter in the Keaton family. Here are some pictures of Yothers from her early days on the show:

Yothers was the younger sister on Family Ties of the then sex symbol Justine Bateman. Yothers was often referred to as the "homely" daughter on the show, and was not known for her looks. The producers had her grow her hair long and curly to keep up with the late-1980s style in an effort to draw in male viewers as shown below:

Unfortunately, Yother's new hairstyle never did win over young male viewers and a running joke was created among Family Ties fans that Yothers was not the most attractive girl, as depicted in this "Pathetic Geek Stories" cartoon that was originally posted over at The Onion:

Family Ties went off the air in 1989 when Yothers was 16 years old. When the show ended, Yothers abandoned her blonde hair color and has worn it black ever since then. After Family Ties' cancellation, Yothers struggled to find acting work. She formed the grunge band Jaded with her brother Cory in 1996 and released the album Confessions in 2000. Unfortunately, the album was not commercially successful and the band broke up a short time later.

After a nine year absence from acting, Tina was given the lead role in Lovelace the Musical, a 2004 stage show based on the life of former pornographic movie star Linda Lovelace. Yothers has also gained a substantial amount of weight in recent years and was cast in the fourth season of Celebrity Fit Club. When I saw her on the saw I was in absolute shock because she appeared to have gained 75-100 lbs since the late 1980s. In her defense she had apparently just had a child, but that doesn't account for such a large weight gain. When she started on the show she weighed in at over 200 lbs.

Yothers actually performed well on Celebrity Fit Club and managed to drop 42 lbs during the show. However, despite her impressive weight loss, there should no doubt that Tina Yothers is one washed-up celebrity!

*** Update - April 10, 2008 ***

Tina Yothers is appearing on Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp, and she does seem like a decent person. Recaps of the episodes from Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp can be found here.

  3. I was never one for television shows. When I did come across one I enjoyed, I watched it loyally - Tina Yother's was an adorable little girl, and I don't remember anyone thinking she was homely or ugly. She might not have been a sex symbol, but she was adorable inside and out and she was part of what made that show's success!

and considering she's not pasted on the tabloids as a bottomed out, drugged up, drunken, sleeze - I guess she grew up pretty ok - a few pounds here and there are real life...

  4. elizabeth, since you're so perfect, why don't you post your picture first?

  5. it's her nose.. if she got a nose job she'd look good.

  6. To the anonymous person who said "elizabeth, since you're so perfect, why don't you post your picture first?" I don't think that's what Elizabeth was saying. I took that as she was just defending Tina's natural beauty as it seems she was automatically being judged for not looking like a Jessica Simpson (her example), which society as a whole does tend to do. And half the time the people who do the judging fit the mold for being model thin or whatever else the "in" look of today is. So Tina gained some weight and dyed her hair black. I think she looks beautiful.

Or Elizabeth could've even meant it in the urban dictionary sense. You know one of the definitions they have for washed up.
    Courteously of http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=washed+up

“what losers call people who have accomplished somthing once or who are above them in looks, personality , talent etc.

i havent done anything good in my life and aint comfortable wit myself so im gona call him washed up cause he did somthin or accomplished somthin”

Some people ARE quick to judge even though they really shouldn’t talk. Yeah on a side note even the person who submitted that definition to UD shouldn’t talk because of their ironical use of poor grammar. That aside though you can see their point of how the term is used. I’m sure some folks, not all mind you, but some who pick on the “washed-up” stars probably do so because they want to make themselves feel better. Never mind any of what the celebrity may have been able to accomplish while they were in the limelight.

I also second anonymous commenter who said "considering she's not pasted on the tabloids as a bottomed out, drugged up, drunken, sleeze - I guess she grew up pretty ok - a few pounds here and there are real life..."

Very well said. The same thing goes for some other "washed-up celebrities" that I can name offhand too that aren't included on this blog yet. I'm not going to tell who I'm specifically thinking of though because I don't want to contribute to what's sure to be the bashing of some people I still love and admire.

  7. JewveBeenFramed, why are you playing the gay card when Jill never said anything against people's sexuality?
You being gay was only something you mentioned yourself. I think you telling her she has homohate was a pretty low-blow. Maybe you have your own insecurities and are one of those people who pick on celebrities to make yourself feel better like she said some folks have been known to do. True I don't know you from Adam, but she didn't personally attack you, and then you turn around and make it sound like she offended you being gay.

"I'm sure we'll come to some of your other idols as the blog goes on and I personally will build the crucifixes to nail them to."

Yeah good luck with that when you don't even know who she's talking about. It's true in time that whomever she meant will probably get mentioned on this blog, but with so many former child stars I don't see how you could personally build crucifixes to all that she may have specifically been talking about, not unless you just plan to crucify everybody here and as you bash everyone you think equally hateful remarks about a girl you've never even met. If you do that, wow then it might look like you need some anger management. Just letting one person’s opinion hang you up like that would be crazy.

Just to let you know too and to be clear, this is not me homohating on you. I could care less one way or the other if you’re gay, straight, sleep with goats, whatever I don’t care about your personal life. Whatever you do like that is your business. All I’m trying to do is understand why you reacted the way you did when all someone did was express their opinion. No one said you had agree with it, but as with any place where there are forums and one can make comments, people just want to throw in their two cents. I’ve probably written a novel myself here and sorry about that but your comment just had me too curious to ignore. There was no hatred (homo or otherwise) going on in her comment, and yet ironically you seem to have you own hatred right now towards her.

  8. Screw you, eilonwe!

You think you can come on here and call me out? I've had to battle little Nazis like you my whole life! Do you know what it is like to be Gay, Jewish and an international gay icon? It's sore, especially in the lower areas! I don't like 'phobics, and I see a raging phobic when I look at you.

Your hate shows through in all of you words (yep, everyone you wrote in that novella to me!). The words of a hateful homohater! I wish you were hear right now. I'd bash you into submission with my legendary penis, but because I am a level-headed man, I would call you an ambulance and ensure that you are not killed by my rage.

    ---
Just letting one person’s opinion hang you up like that would be crazy.
    ---

Every thought of taking your own advice, Doctor Dumb?

PS, Tina is still fat like a whale.

  9. Just an FYI, your opinion about me (which is wrong by the way) or anyone else whether famous or not, is not hanging me up. As I said I was just trying to understand where you were coming from and why you seemed to get offended at someone defending a celebrity. Clearly you were coming from a place of hatred yourself though. You are definitely full of enough of that. You claim all my words speak hatred, well all yours speak volumes about you too. When the first words out of your mouth are “screw you” I can tell just how mature you are. I appear to have been definitely right about you needing anger management. Thank you for confirming that throughout your entire post.

Also your opinion of Tina is your opinion. You also have a right to state that opinion. My problem with the things you said were only really in regards to how went about verbally attacking another person’s opinion just because they didn’t seem to agree with what a lot of other people who share in your opinion on this blog have said. I mean I may disagree with your comment personally, but it’s your right to say it, and I have no problem with our varying opinions. As they say we could ‘agree to disagree.’ That would be the mature, responsible thing to do. I know I’m willing if you are.

  10. SHUT UP, EILONWE!

If only I could reach through my computer...I would donkey punch you so hard!

Stop writing novellas to me about why you are fat and unable to leave the house! I don't care. Lose some weight, fatty, or I will come and beat it out of you! I know that you hate us homosexuals, you said so in that nasty hurtful email you sent me. I don't care what you say, God loves me.

I'm so angry right now! I need to go punch some cows in the face. Man, I wish there were some whales in the river right now, I'd imagine that they are you and punch them harder than the hardest thing you can think of. GET BENT, FATSO!

  11. I know you’re going to respond to this because it seems you always have to have the last word on things, so go ahead and reply to this in your usual hateful way. Just know that I am done commenting to you after I post this. I’m not wasting anymore of my time dealing with you when it appears you are not only hateful, but now also delusional. I never sent you any email. How would I do that when I don’t even know (or care frankly) what it is? Also thankfully I know that not all homosexuals are immature assholes like you. I know some friends who are gay and they act nothing like you. You’re giving homosexuals a bad name. If someone read your comments and didn’t actually know any homosexual personally to know any better and they stereotyped and assumed all homosexual acted like you, then I can see why some folks do have homophobia and why gay hate crimes take place. I also think I can see why you’ve had to deal with little Nazis your whole life. Don’t assume it was always about you being gay. It might be because you’re a jerk too.
As an overall group of people I do not have homohate, as I said I have friends who are gay, and I have nothing against them. You however make it very easy for me to have some JewveBeenFramedhate.

I’ve also just been reading some of your other comments you’ve made to other people on various different posts, and it seems as if you can’t say anything but hateful words to anyone. You seem to have many problems, and are a very spiteful person. My only advice to you is seek counseling. They may be able to help, but perhaps you are already too far gone. That would be my guess.

You also say you’re level-headed. Well I fail to see that.
You’re not even logical. Suddenly I’m fat just because I don’t agree with your assessment of Tina Yothers? I know you’re not going to believe me, nor you wouldn’t want to admit it even if you did, but you’re wrong about that. A person wouldn’t have to look like an anorexic celebrity to know that you don’t have to be pencil thin or else be labeled as fat. There’s a healthy average medium and generally most folks know that.

And if anyone’s unable to leave the house it must be you.
As I said I’ve just read some of your comments on other posts, and seems like you post more often than Anonymous, which is saying a lot considering they are at least multiple people.
But I don’t believe that about you. Surely you leave your house because you have to go and work the streets.

To conclude the novella (yeah I made sure this would be one just to piss you off), I know you didn’t believe me before anyway, but my words were not hateful in any of my previous comments. Now however I have grown to sick of you. Again, not gay people in general. Just one gay man in particular and his username is JewveBeenFramed.

  12. Dear Fatty (who is FAT),

I didn't read anything you wrote (not like you're wasting your time as you stay in the house ALL DAY, because you are FAT and cannot LEAVE the HOUSE!) but your confession of hating gay men. I rest my case. Get off the internets and into jail. Hate crimes are not welcome on the 'net and you aren't either. Your heart is dark and full of nastiness much like Tina's heart is full of cholesterol. In short, I will be alive a lot longer than you as I am fit and full of beans!

Gotta go and meet some men now, something you will NEVER do. Pip-pip, fatty!

  13. re: JewveBeenFramed

I don't think these are the comments of a real person -- sounds too much like the immature comments made by a group of kids all sitting around the computer and giggling about their made-up identity and all of the hassle they've caused.

I'm guessing this is a bored teenager having some fun at everyone else's expense.....

Ignore them -- not worth playing their game....

  14. I think she was really, really pretty on "Family Ties", especially the later seasons. She had exquisite hair! Those are just unflattering pictures of her. Justine Bateman was ugly.

  15. Some people do gain a lot of weight from pregnancy. Weight gain can be caused by a lot of things, hormones, medications that a person might have to take while pregnant. Gestational diabetes, etc. I think she is a pretty woman.

  16. You people are all pointless losers.

  17. Wow this is hilarious when a gay guy threatens you!! Watch out for the purse and even funnier is the part about wishing he could hit someone through the computer screen. Just priceless!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. She never did have any chemistry with anyone on Family Ties. She was not fat but so much larger than Fox or Bateman she always looked like she was gonna devour them or just push them over or out of the way. Her actig was minimal. You could've sent her to live with Chuck from "Happy Days" and no one would've notice or cared.

  19. That's bull. Tina is a great actress. She did gain wieght but so did alot of actors and singers. She was Great in every thing she has done. And the bloned hair was Nt her idea so lay off. An she is actualy very beautiful. An there are alot of ugly girls on tv so why don't you people go comment on them instead, and then go take a look at your self and think about what people say about you!!!!! Lay off Tina!!!

  20. Id like to know what was with the rumor that she was dead. I head about it way before South Park brought it up.

  21. I'd hit that.

  22. OK, if you people don't have anything better to do with your time than debate whether Tina Yothers is fat or not, you have WAY TOO MUCH time on your hands! Get a life!! Personally, I think if everyone would just take a good look at themselves in the mirror before judging others, they would find they aren't the most beautiful person on the face of the Earth either. And keep in mind, that for those of you who are calling T.Y. fat or ugly or both, are any of you fashion models, beauty queens, married to a celebrity, gracing the cover of a current magazine? Because if you aren't, then I say shut the f**k up and start improving your OWN looks before you criticize others. And, again, just get a life already!!!!!!!

  23. At least the so called "Washed up celebrities" were in fact celebrities. These are people who'm had achieved something that would outlive both the publishers of this blog and myself. My hat is off to anyone featured here and I would not term any of you as "Washed up". You might have deviated from model social standard; but you have all contributed to my life and development (if only by entertaining me). I find shaming you by using a derogatory term such as washed up, offensive. I'm not a Christian, so I won't quote the bible, but I would parallel it. To the author of this blog, If you have to shame people in order to feel good, you have a real problem. Rather start a blog on how sexy celebs have become since we saw them in years gone past... Then include everyone you called washed up, since there is something beautiful in everyone.

  25. When she was on Family Ties, her character was supposed to be a plain tom boyish girl. I can’t think of anyone who could have played that part better than her. As she grew up (as we all do) she is quite a pretty woman. She reminds me of Kelly Osbourne.

  26. When I was little, I used to watch this show. I thought both of the girls were gorgeous and cool. Jennifer had confidence and personality. In real life, that's what takes you far and that's what really counts, not if some pimply 16 year or douchbag with a beer gut thinks you're hot.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't think Yothers is washed up, I met her once at an airport and she was a very decent, laid back person.

She's also a mother and a wife and has a loving family.

Washed up is jessica simpson, or paris hilton or new york from flavor of love.

Not everyone is into skinny plastic looking chicks.

  30. She's gross, not everyone is pretty, and her son is Chucky incarnate. She's washed up, just deal with it. And most beautiful celebrities are naturally beautiful, just deal with that too. There are ugly people, Tina, and there are naturally pretty people, Jessica Simpson. Now stop fighting a losing battle, losers.

  31. I always watched Family Ties....and enjoyed it very much~I had an appreciation for each cast member and Tina was not an exception. She IS a normal, regular, everyday kind a gal~Very refreshing. When so many of us females struggle (at some point or another in our lives) with body image...it's nice to see, especially with teens myself now. Tina is a beautiful lady on the inside and out. I agree with the "Chris" ~ Psalms 139:14 ~ I enjoy the positive sharing here (I totally realize that there are positives/negatives in all of us) ...meaning that whatever is shared is shared (however, nastiness...not so much but...it's my choice as to whether I let it bother me/get to me)Ultimately, I am proud of Tina and continue to wish her all the best, always!

It really pisses me off to hear such disparaging comments like "All Washed Up Celebrities" about men & women who were once on TV or in Movies. I would imagine that a child actor goes through enough hurt & trauma to be well known one day and then called a nobody the next. Most of all by people who have never ever been celebrated for any reason at all. I think Tina Yothers is beautiful, I'd thank her if I met her for really leaving me with Great Memories of a Great Era of TV that was wholesome and fun to watch. Thank you Tina & God bless you & your family wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

  40. I saw Tina at a fundraiser event in Fullerton California and she sang and mentioned she was Mexican. She made a statement about people she knew claimed to be Spanish and not Mexican. I thought of how weird it was to have her tell the audience she was not Spanish, she was Mexican.

  42. Tina is fabulous. What have you ever done, you nay-sayers? Did you be a skilled actor as a child? Can you write and sing songs that touch a heart? On top of that, do you have a devoted husband and adoring children? I think you protest too much. Envy is a sin. I'm glad she is happy after what must seem to be be a long and difficult path.
